and the silent threat you may not expect

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are a type of true bug belonging to the family Cimicidae. They feed on the blood of humans and animals and are small insects with a broad, oval, and flattened body. Adult bed bugs measure approximately 3–5 millimeters in length and are reddish-brown in color. The species commonly found in Thailand is Cimex sp. Bed bugs reach sexual maturity at approximately 6–12 months of age. During mating, the male pierces the female’s body with its reproductive organ. After mating, the male dies shortly thereafter. The female, if able to feed on blood, will begin laying eggs within 7–14 days, depositing about five eggs per day in dark crevices over a period of up to 50 days. After approximately 30 days, the nymphs that have fed will develop and enter a new life cycle. If they are unable to feed on blood, their lifespan is limited to about six months. Fully grown bed bugs, however, can survive without a blood meal by remaining dormant for as long as 12–18 months.

Why do bed bugs prefer to hide in beds?

Bed bugs stay close to their primary food source, which is human blood.

Bed bugs are parasites and cannot survive far from humans for long, as they rely on human blood for survival. Therefore, beds become an ideal hiding place, offering warmth, safety, and easy access to their food source.

Bed bugs avoid daylight and become active at night when they search for a host to feed on.

Although bed bugs are insect-like organisms, they are very small and wingless. During the daytime, they hide in seams of mattresses, pillows, and bed frames. At night, they emerge to feed on human blood while people are asleep, as body temperature during sleep is most suitable for feeding.

Bed bugs choose suitable locations for egg laying to support their reproduction.

They cannot survive far from humans for long, as they depend on human blood to live. Therefore, beds serve as an ideal hiding place that is warm, safe, and close to their food source.

How can we deal with bed bug problems?

Although bed bugs are extremely small and often difficult to see, the problems they cause are far too serious to ignore. These include bite marks on the skin, unpleasant odors, and ongoing irritation night after night. If left untreated, bed bugs can reproduce rapidly and become difficult to eliminate using conventional methods. Therefore, let’s explore some initial steps you can take immediately before seeking professional bed bug control services from Pest Guard.

Maintain regular cleaning of the bedroom and bed area.

Start by vacuuming and thoroughly cleaning the mattress, pillows, bed frame, and small crevices where bed bugs often hide. Regular cleaning helps reduce the chances of bed bugs establishing nests and reproducing.

Wash fabrics with high heat to eliminate germs and breeding sources.
